K9As part of their reading curriculum, third-grade students at
Wyomissing Hills Elementary Center recently read Aero and Officer Mike: Police Partners, a true story that follows a day in the lives of a police officer and his K-9 partner.

This winter, that story came to life as students welcomed local police officers, K-9 partners, and police vehicles for a special learning experience.

Ms. Joan Plummer Russell, the author of Aero and Officer Mike, spent two years on duty shifts with Corporal Mike Matsik and K-9 Aero. Trough their shared experience, the text, and photographs reveal truths about police work and partnership. The thoughtful text documents a deep friendship between man and dog that goes far beyond police work.

The visiting police officers shared their personal duties and responsibilities and answered questions, creating a lasting bond between police officers and the community they serve.

The District thanks the Wyomissing Borough Police Department, the West Reading Borough Police, and the Berks County Sherif’s Office for visiting our students and sharing their stories.
